Food
Everything at the Big Texan Steak Ranch (7701 E. I-40, 806/372-6000, www.bigtexan.com, 7am-10:30pm daily, $15-30) is, well, big. There’s a massive sculpture of a steer out front, giant Texas flags lined up outside, and the interior includes a huge 2-story dining room with a bar, shooting range, and slot machines. The food is fine, but that’s not the main draw. This place is legendary for its free 72-ounce (2-kg) steak dinner. But it’s only free if you eat the entire steak—with a baked potato, salad, and shrimp cocktail—in less than an hour.
Dine at Amarillo hot spot S Crush Wine Bar (701 S. Polk St., 806/418-2011, www.crushdeli.com, 11am-9pm Mon.-Thurs., 11am-10pm Fri.-Sat., $15-30). If you get a seat at the bar, you’ll rub elbows with chatty business travelers in town for meetings and friendly locals donning cowboy hats and bolo ties. A bar seat also affords you an up-close show of the mixologists expertly shaking up craft cocktails—not to mention that you won’t have to endure the long wait for a table. Order steak frites with creamy blue cheese and piping hot fries or the succulent salmon with risotto.
Want to eat at the oldest restaurant in Amarillo? Head to S Golden Light Café and Cantina (2906 SW 6th Ave., 806/374-9237, www.goldenlightcafe.com, 11am-10pm Mon.-Wed., 11am-11pm Thurs.-Sat., $3-9), which was established in 1946. The hickory-smoked Gooney’s ’shroom burger and the all-natural buffalo burger are delish. The service is good but things do move slowly, so just sit back, relax, and order a local brew.
